Arbitrage Betting in Australia

Australian users need more than a stake formula. They also need to check whether each provider is permitted to offer its service, whether a market is pre-match or in-play, and whether the quoted prices use identical settlement rules.

Is arbitrage betting legal in Australia?

There is no useful one-word answer for every user, provider, market and state or territory. Arbitrage is a calculation method, but the underlying bets remain subject to Australian law, local rules, provider licensing, product restrictions and each operator's terms.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority explains that the Interactive Gambling Act governs online gambling services and advertising. Its guidance identifies prohibited services, including online in-play sports betting and sports betting services that do not hold an Australian licence. Read the current ACMA Interactive Gambling Act guidance before relying on any general article.

Pre-match and in-play are not the same

A scanner may display markets at different stages. In Australia, online in-play sports betting is specifically restricted under federal rules. Users should not assume that a price visible somewhere online is a service they may lawfully access or place online.

ArbScanner is designed as an information and price-comparison tool. It does not place bets, accept wagers, hold betting funds or bypass a provider's controls. Users must independently verify availability and legality.

Check the provider, not just the price

  • Confirm the operator is permitted to offer the relevant service in Australia.
  • Use the operator's official domain and check its current licence information.
  • Read account, bonus, market-settlement and obvious-error terms.
  • Check whether your state or territory adds requirements.
  • Do not use tools or workarounds to access a restricted service.

Australian execution considerations

Decimal odds and Australian dollars make the maths straightforward, but execution still creates risk. The second price may move before it is accepted; a stake may be limited; and two similarly named markets may settle differently. Some sports include overtime in one market but exclude it in another.

Before acting, compare the event, start time, market name, selection, period, overtime treatment, void rules and accepted stake. If any item differs, do not treat the prices as opposite sides of the same market.

Safer way to evaluate a quoted opportunity

  1. Use a calculator to verify that all outcomes total below 100%.
  2. Confirm every leg is pre-match if that is the intended workflow.
  3. Open each provider's official market and compare settlement wording.
  4. Check maximum accepted stake before relying on the split.
  5. Recalculate after any price or stake changes.
  6. Keep records and stop if the final market no longer matches.
